Thoughts from the Studio

by Will Stewart

My first memory of making this record is of standing, shit scared, in the studio at 40 oz Sound on a cold Saturday morning in March 1999 and wondering just how in the world we were going to pull this off? We were going to make a record? A Corndaddy record?

Will, left, sings a song, bro

What had started out as a loose-knit confederation of friends strumming acoustic guitars in my study on Friday nights, had evolved into a band. A real band. We all agreed on that.

We had our own songs -- not just the Dylan and Uncle Tupelo covers we originally came together around -- and we'd been playing some regular gigs.

But a record? I was dubious. My second memory, just moments later, is of hearing an acoustic guitar, strummed in another room, and Jud's and Kevin's voices keening for a new harmony, singing: "Blind, blind faith brought us here ... " It was the first time I'd hear the skeleton of what was to become "Trying to Say, " the last song recorded for this record. Blind faith? Not really, no.

These guys, Jud and Kevin, believed in their songs enough to make sure you got to hear them, too. And they believed in the rest of us -- rather all of us, together -- to bring them alive. Jerry and I try to keep things moving; Jud and Kevin provide the vision and the fireworks; and Alan kind of swirls above it all, swooping down now and again to linger with us mortals.

We're Corndaddy. And we hope you like our record ...
